Dominic Thiem is set to retire after this season and, despite being a two-time French Open finalist, the French Tennis Federation did not give him the wild card for the event, as a consequence of which, fans criticized the organization.

However, the event which the 30-year-old will play next has been announced. He will feature in the Bonmont Tennis Masters, a grass court exhibition tournament in Switzerland which will be played from June 9 to 11.

The top eight players are set to play in the event. This will help Thiem and other players prepare for the next grass-court tournaments.

Thiem last featured at the Madrid Open qualifiers but couldn’t advance to the main draw after losing to Felipe Alves and Thanasi Kokkinakis. Before Madrid, the Austrian made it to the Round of 32 of the Bavarian International and lost the match to Alejandro Moro Canas

Sascha Bajin slams the French Tennis Federation for excluding Dominic Thiem from the wild card list

As Dominic Thiem was not given the wild card, he will have to play the qualifiers to progress to the main draw. Amidst fans’ criticism, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams‘ former hitting partner Sascha Bajin, criticized the federation for ignoring the two-time Roland Garros finalist.

French open not giving Thiem a 2 time finalist a WC in his final year is a joke. Sorry @rolandgarros but that’s just terrible and who ever came up with that decision needs to be ….. (you guys fill the blank) Sascha Bajin wrote on X

Bajin also coached Naomi Osaka to her first two Grand Slam singles titles. In 2018, he was given the WTA Coach of the Year award as well.

Thiem, meanwhile, reached the finals of the French Open in 2018 and 2019, losing both to 14-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal. The Austrian also made it to the 2020 Australian Open final but lost to current World No.1 Novak Djokovic

Thiem finally lifted his first Grand Slam title when he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the 2020 US Open final. He was two sets down but managed to win the next three sets and eventually the match with a scoreline of 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.

A few days ago, Thiem announced his retirement through an Instagram video. He admitted that the recurring wrist injury forced him to hang up his racket.
