With Real Madrid fans being told to prepare themelves for ‘painful departures’ this summer, the future of Luka Modric remains unknown. The 38-year-old has seen his role in the squad change this season, but there has been some suggestion that he could still remain, following important contributions in the Champions League and a start in El Clasico.

As per Telemadrid and Onda Madrid (recounted by MD), Modric is set for an important meeting with President Florentino Perez on Thursday, which could go a long way to deciding his future. Various reports have said that Modric’s renewal is unlikely, although the most recent word is that the decision will be postponed until after the Champions League final, as is the case with Toni Kroos.

The Croatian is one of the highest earners in the squad, and it would be no surprise if Los Blancos offered him less money next season. While it makes economic sense to lose Modric, there is still nobody else in the squad with a similar skillset, and Carlo Ancelotti’s use of him at the sharp end of the season shows that there is still a role for him, albeit a reduced one. Similarly, losing Kroos in the same summer would suppose a change of style for Los Blancos, without Modric to fall back if he were to leave, as someone capable of setting the tempo.
