San Francisco 49ers Receive Brutal Grade From PFF For Disappointing Offseason
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers came up just one win short of a championship last season, falling in the Super Bowl to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a tough loss to swallow, but one that has motivated them to take the final step and secure a ring in 2024. Unfortunately, the 2024 offseason was not ideal for the 49ers.

While the goal was to improve the roster during the offseason to have a better shot at a championship this season, John Lynch and the front office were unable to accomplish that goal.

Now, they are seeing the criticism from the media for their failure to improve the roster on paper. They received a rough grade for their offseason work thus far.

San Francisco 49ers Receive Brutal Offseason Grade From Pro Football Focus

Pro Football Focus has broken out their grades for every single team. The grades focus on the offseason performance of each team and the San Francisco 49ers did not do well. PFF ended up giving them a C+ grade.

“The Niners didn’t make a huge splash in free agency but signed some core players in Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos and Jordan Elliott. They lost Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw from their defensive line but have the aforementioned new bodies to try to make up for it. Ultimately, San Francisco needs better offensive line play in 2024, and the only significant addition the team made there was third-round pick Dominick Puni. It doesn’t feel like San Francisco got better this offseason.”

The breakdown provided by PFF did miss one key departure that also came from the defensive side of the football. Chase Young, the talented pass-rusher that was acquired from the Washington Commanders before the trade deadline, also left town to sign with the New Orleans Saints in free agency.

Needless to say, the San Francisco 49ers have some doubts to prove wrong in 2024. With the moves they made and the losses they suffered, can they prove that their offseason actually made them better?

None of this is to say that the 49ers aren’t going to be competitive in 2024. They still have Brock Purdy and an elite group of weapons for him to work with. The defense is still going to be strong.

However, a team that nearly won a championship usually goes all-out during the offseason to get over the hump. That is something that the San Francisco 49ers did not do this offseason.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the 2024 NFL season has in store for the 49ers. They had a quiet offseason, but are still very confident that they can win a Super Bowl. We’ll see if their offseason moves or lack thereof end up weakening them or not.
