Is Kevin Durant Really Unhappy With Phoenix Suns? Stephen A. Smith Clarifies Remarks
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

When Kevin Durant joined the Phoenix Suns last season, fans expected the All-Star forward to find his place with that team, as compared to his time playing for the Brooklyn Nets. But according to NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith, he was never happy in the Valley, especially after exiting the playoffs recently.

During the offseason, the Suns went all out by trading Chris Paul to the Washington Wizards for Bradley Beal. Once that deal was pulled off, Phoenix was seen as legitimate title contenders for having a trio of elite scorers in their lineup.

That expectation was dashed throughout the regular season when the Kevin Durant-led team didn’t even finish in the Western Conference’s top three. Instead, their 49-33 record only positioned them in the sixth seed. It didn’t help that their ninth-place offense was paired with a 13th-ranked defense and supplemented by a weak bench unit.

All of these factors were highlighted in their first round series against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. In those four games, Phoenix didn’t shoot the ball well, made more turnovers, and grabbed fewer offensive rebounds than their opponents. As a result, the Suns exited the playoffs earlier than expected.

Stephen A. Smith Clarifies Remark About Kevin Durant Being Unhappy With Phoenix Suns

After Minnesota swept the Phoenix Suns, fans thought that Durant was unhappy with his team after Stephen A. Smith insinuated that idea. Just recently, though, the NBA analyst made a clarification in a post he shared on X:

Even if the allegation about his happiness in Phoenix was true, Durant was still playing at an elite level against Minnesota. In those four games, the two-time NBA champion averaged 26.8 points on 55 percent shooting from the field, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Durant during the offseason. What’s certain, though, is that the Suns’ front office will have to face several hard decisions if they want to change the course of this team.
