Sports fans regularly hear Joe Buck announce prime-time NFL football games on ESPN every week during the football season. However, ever since he left Fox following the 2021 season, they have not heard him announce Major League Baseball games . Buck will make a return to the sport as he will step into the Cardinals broadcast booth May 24 when the Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs.

Buck will share the broadcast booth with Chip Caray, and the broadcast will take place on the Cardinals regional sports network affiliate, Bally Sports Midwest.

Buck and Caray are two of baseball’s legacy names in broadcasting. Buck’s father, Jack Buck, was the long-time voice of the St. Louis Cardinals and also for national broadcasts of baseball’s most prominent showcase games. Caray’s grandfather, Harry Caray, was also a legendary broadcaster for the Cardinals and later for the Chicago Cubs. Harry Caray and Joe Buck were broadcast partners for the Cardinals and are considered two of the best announcers in the history of the game.

Joe Buck first came into prominence as the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals before becoming the Fox Network’s main voice on its baseball coverage. Joe Buck started off working with his father before gaining the opportunity to work on more prominent broadcasts.

He eventually became one of the rare broadcasters who has secured the lead role in both Major League Baseball and the National Football League. Buck has been the top broadcaster in both the World Series and the Super Bowl.

Buck and Caray will discuss their legacy

While Joe Buck and Chip Caray will provide the details of the game between the Cardinals and the Cubs as it unfolds, they will also share stories of their famous relatives. Both have indicated how proud they are to come from prominent baseball broadcasting families.

Chip Caray’s famous grandfather is the best known of that family’s broadcasters, but his father Skip Caray was a long-time play by play announcer for the Atlanta Braves until his death in 2008.

The Cardinals and Cubs are long-time National League Central archrivals. and have battled many times. The Cubs have been off to a strong start in the 2024 season and have a 25-19 record. They are in second place in the division, 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. They have high hopes of making the playoffs this season under new manager Craig Counsell, something they fell just short of in the 2023 season.

The Cardinals are not contenders at this point. They are struggling once again this season and they have an 18-25 record. They are in last place in the National League Central, 8 games behind the Brewers.

Nevertheless, the series between the Cubs and Cardinals normally brings about intense competition. Similar to the American League rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, both teams take great pride in beating the other and causing pain for their opponents’ fan base.

Joe Buck and Chip Caray will happily relive stories of one of the sport’s great rivalries, and baseball fans will get a chance to enjoy their partnership.
