Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) are guaranteeing action when they clash on May 4.

The two fighters meet in the headliner of a Premier Boxing Champions PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Canelo Promotions and TGB Promotions are promoting the event in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Zanfer Boxing Promotions. Fight fans can purchase the card from Prime Video, DAZN and PPV.com. The clash will see Álvarez defend his status as undisputed champion for a fourth time.

Both men spoke at a final press conference on Wednesday. While Canelo and Munguía have been respectful of each other during promotional activities, things became heated when Oscar De La Hoya spoke. For many years, the undisputed champion fought on De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions cards. After a bitter falling-out, Canelo left the company. The clash against Munguía will be his first time working with the company since.

Canelo and Oscar De La Hoya Get Into Argument

Bitterness Between Canelo and De La Hoya

The press conference had been going along smoothly until De La Hoya stepped to the podium. Some of his comments served as a reminder of the bitter split between his company and Canelo:

“Yes, I’ve been to rehab several times,” said De La Hoya. “Yes, there were some really points in my life. And yes, there were times when work was not my priority based on my mental health, which I had neglected for so long. But that doesn’t change the fact that Golden Boy built Canelo Álvarez, period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it’s mine, so put some f------ respect on it.”

Canelo began mouthing off in Spanish as De La Hoya continued to speak. Once the Golden Boy Promotions head stepped away from the podium, Canelo got up and began walking towards him, all the while sounding off on him. Neither man got too close to each other, thanks to the few people who stood in their way. However, Canelo did not mince his words in response to his former promoter.

“He’s a f------ a--hole,” Canelo said in English. “That’s what I say. He’s a f------ a--hole. He tried to keep the attention for him, not for Munguía. He’s a f------ a--hole…”

Canelo and Jaime Munguía Promise All-Action at Spirited Press Conference

Aside from that heated exchange between Canelo and De La Hoya, the remainder of the press conference was a lot calmer. However, the champion and his opponent were sure to tell all to expect a war when they clash. Below is some of what they had to say.

Canelo

“This is going to be a great Mexican war. Munguía and I both come to win, but I am going to win and win decisively. The fans are really going to enjoy Saturday night and I’m proud to make history with two Mexican fighters fighting for all four belts.”

“I feel better than ever and I’m ready for this fight. I don’t know how many rounds it’s going to go, but the Mexican fans are going to love this fight.”

“I don’t care about experiences vs. youth, I’m Canelo. I have everything I need to win and I know exactly what I need to do.”

Munguía

“I’m so happy and excited that this fight is almost here. My team has been behind me the whole way and all the fans can expect a full-out Mexican war. Make sure to tune in, you will not be disappointed.”

“Canelo has a great deal of experience and has faced great fighters. I may not have the same resume, but I have youth on my side. I’m going to showcase my capabilities on Saturday night.”

Fight Prediction

Between the two, Canelo is the far more experienced fighter. Additionally, he has consistently displayed an iron chin against even the hardest of punchers. Munguía has talent, but it has been a while since he has fought an opponent of Canelo’s calibre. His defence is not great, something viewers can expect Canelo to exploit. However, Munguía has shown an ability to stay standing even when repeatedly stunned. Expect the fight to go the distance, but with Álvarez winning a comfortable unanimous decision.
